Wednesday progressed through to the second round of the Capital One Cup with a 4-2 win at Oldham Athletic on Monday night but boss Dave Jones slammed his side’s performance.

The Latics deservedly led 2-0 at half-time with the Owls failing to click into gear before a brace from Chris O’Grady and goals from Jermaine Johnson and Michail Antonio in the second half eased the visitors through.

But Jones couldn’t hide his disappointment at his team’s first-half showing and says his men must improve for the season opener at Derby County on Saturday.

‘It’s the worst I have seen so far and I think some of them thought they just had to turn up,’ Jones told the official SWFC website.

‘But once the game started, they soon discovered otherwise. Oldham were first to the ball, first to the challenge while we just didn’t put in a tackle and then missing a penalty just summed things up.

‘You have asked me about me about the second half display but all I’m thinking of right now is the first and if we play anything like that in the Championship then we will never, if it all, get the chance to come back from two goals down.’
