Wednesday boss Alan Irvine was left ‘delighted’ with his troops’ response as they bagged valuable Championship points against Leicester City.

A brace of goals from Leon Clarke saw Wednesday run out 2-0 winners against high-flying Leicester City at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The vital win came just a week after the embarrassing 5-0 loss at relegation rivals Reading.

‘It was a great response to what was a very poor performance last week,’ Irvine told the official SWFC website.

‘It was the kind of response that we’ve talked about all week and it was a response that we hoped we were going to get.

‘It’s one thing to respond in the right way on the training ground but it’s something else to respond on the pitch and I am delighted about the way the lads went about their jobs from the start of the game.’

The victory saw Wednesday make ground on some teams above them, but the Owls remain in the Championship relegation zone.

And Irvine will be looking for his men to continue their response with a tough trip to West Brom in midweek.
