Injury boost for Garry Monk with Sheffield Wednesday man ‘in contention’ to face Brighton

|

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Massimo Luongo is ‘in contention’ to face Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup third round on Saturday afternoon. Luongo has been suffering from a concussion that caused him to be replaced in Wednesday’s Boxing Day defeat to Stoke City.

The 27-year-old missed Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City (December 29, 2019) and 1-0 defeat to Hull City (January 1, 2020) due to the head injury, but he could return to the matchday squad after training all week with the first-team.

Sam Hutchinson and Barry Bannan have been regulars in midfield while Luongo has been out, but Garry Monk could ring the changes for Wednesday’s FA Cup clash. He’ll want to rest first-team players after the busy Christmas period saw the Owls play three times in seven days (Boxing Day, December 29, New Year’s Day), so there’s a chance Luongo could replace Hutchinson or Bannan.

The Australian international has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals. Luongo has racked up only 720 minutes of Championship football, however, as he was in and out of the side early before injuries cut down his playing time.
