Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round clash and Osaze Urhoghide drew praise from some supporters for his performance.

The 19-year-old made his first-team debut for Wednesday, starting alongside Morgan Fox, Dominic Iorfa and Julian Borner at the back, and helped the Owls keep a clean sheet at the Amex Stadium.

Urhoghide revealed in a post-match interview that he joined Wednesday on a free transfer after leaving AFC Wimbledon over the summer. He had a successful trial with the Owls and has been working hard in the reserves ever since.

Despite impressing as Garry Monk’s men pulled off an FA Cup scalp, it’s hard to see Urhoghide getting first-team football in the Championship. He’s unlikely to dethrone Borner, Iorfa, Ryan Bennett or Tom Lees at centre-back. He won’t start over Liam Palmer and Moses Odubajo at right-back either.

Nevertheless, Urhoghide deserves the plaudits for the part he played in shutting out Brighton. The Seagulls started Neal Maupay and Pascal Gross in attack but only managed three shots on target at home to a side one division below.

Wednesday next face Leeds United in the Championship on January 11.
