“Awful”, “Poor” – Some fans react to 25 y/o’s performance in Sheff Wed’s 1-1 draw

Sheffield Wednesday drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest and many players came away with praise for their performance. Jacob Murphy didn’t, however, as he struggled at wing-back and was eventually hooked in the second half for Moses Odubajo.

Murphy was given extra defensive duties by Garry Monk and did turn over possession on a number of occasions, but his final ball was criticised on Saturday so it’s unlikely he’ll feature in the makeshift role again. Supporters weren’t impressed with the 25-year-old’s showing at Hillsborough.

Against Forest, Murphy played for 67 minutes, made 37 touches, won one aerial duel, created two chances, completed 73.3% of his 15 passes, whipped in seven crosses with 57% accuracy, made four tackles, gave away one foul and won two free-kicks.

Since joining Wednesday on a season-long loan from Newcastle United last summer, Murphy has gone on to make 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and making two assists.

The 25-year-old got off to a slow start with the Owls, contributing only one goal in the first three months, but he was in better form prior to the season being postponed due to Covid-19 – three goals, one assist in January and February.
