Former Wednesday director Michael Wright has been tipped to succeed Dave Allen as Wednesday chairman following his decision to resign from his post last week according to reports.

The Owls’ future was thrown in to doubt on Friday afternoon when Allen stepped down from his near seven year reign as a director and chairman at Hillsborough.

But the Sunday People, and Sheffield Telegraph writer Alan Biggs has revealed that Wednesday fan and former director – he left the Owls’ board two years ago following a dispute with Allen – Michael Wright is all set to take over the chairmanship of the club.

Wright has kept his shares in the club since he stepped down from the board and is said to have discussed a deal with the rest of the current board and is waiting in the wings to take control at S6.

But media reports are full of takeover talk, and former Newcastle United supremo Freddy Shepherd has been linked with a takeover of the Owls after dropping his interest in Leeds United.

Shepherd sold his stake in the St James’ Park club for £37 million and is keen to make a swift return to football, with Wednesday said to be on his wishlist following the resignation of Allen last Friday.
