The Owls have announced today that they have signed Callum McManaman from West Bromwich Albion on a half season loan. The Star broke the exclusive news this morning that Wednesday were interested in the winger, however, we were also allegedly interested in him in the summer too.

The 25-year-old had a medical last week, ahead of a move to Hillsborough, according to The Star.

The winger picked up major plaudits and began to make a name for himself after running riot in the FA Cup final in 2013, where his Wigan side went onto beat Manchester City, 1-0, thanks to a Ben Watson header in extra time.

After this, Tony Pulis made him the first signing of his regime at West Brom, for a fee believed to be in the region of £4.75m. However, this time last year, he was booked for simulation in a Premier League game, much to the disappointment of Pulis.

Since then, chances have been few and far between at the Hawthorns. He has failed to register a Premier League appearance this term, and he has featured in the Checkatrade Trophy.

He is mainly right-footed, however, can play in a number of positions, such as on either flank, or in behind the striker. The need to have him in the squad could be down to the fact that Wednesday wingers Will Buckley, and Marco Matias, are both still in the injury room.

In my opinion, I think that McManaman has the ability and potential to be a top signing. His close-control dribbling and raw pace could be a key asset to this Wednesday side in the second half of the season. However, according to reports from the Express and Star last May, the winger would cost £5m for Wednesday or another club to purchase, as the Baggies seek to recoup all of their money and then some for the Englishman.

The thing standing in his way that he needs to adapt quickly to the ‘the dynamic’ at S6. It will also be critical that he is fit and ready to play from the get-go, in order to improve squad depth and options in midfield. Wednesday fans will hope not to see a situatuon similar to when Irish winger, Aiden McGeady arrived at Hillsborough last season.
