Wednesday midfielder and player-of-the-season Glenn Whelan has today been linked with a move to a number of Championship rivals after reportedly turning down a new deal.

The Irish Sun is reporting that the former Manchester City youth product has already turned down two deals with the Owls and is set to reject a third as he looks for a move to pastures new.

Wednesday’s Championship rivals Charlton Athletic, Norwich City, Stoke City and Coventry City have all been linked with the former Republic of Ireland under-21 captain with Iain Dowie’s men the supposed favourites for his signature.

The rumours of a move away from S6 for Whelan will spark fresh concerns among Wednesday fans who were already sad to see joint top-scorer Steve Maclean leave the club on a free transfer to Cardiff City recently.

The youngster came up for some criticism during his first season at S6 and was even transfer listed by former boss Paul Sturrock at the start of last season.

But he came back even stronger under the leadership of new boss Brian Laws, scoring a number of goals along the way, to become the Owls official player-of-the-season for the 2006-07 campaign.

Say it ain’t so…
