Following on from the news this week that Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood had signed a new extension at Hillsborough, on Wednesday afternoon the club finally confirmed the official arrival of German defender Julian Borner – even though we all knew he was actually here and had been out in Portugal.

The experienced centre-half came through the youth ranks at German second tier side Energie Cottbus, and the former Under 18 international made the switch in 2014 to Arminia Bielefeld where they won Liga 3 in his maiden season. With over 150 games for them and serving as skipper.

The 28-year-old makes the switch to us as a free agent and hopefully there will be more announcements soon, as we still have quite a few to go – and then hopefully some surprising ones – but not manager Steve Bruce’s departure to Newcastle United for obvious reasons.

Now we’ll see what he’s actually like but fans are happy after a tricky summer so far.
