Wednesday lead once again by a fantastic Fernando Forestieri double strolled past hapless Birmingham City at Hillsborough on Boxing Day. A bumper festive crowd of nearly 29,000 witness a Wednesday side sporting a few changes ease past a Birmingham City side that prior to kickoff were only one goal behind the Owls in the Championship league table.

With both sides trading early blows it was Wednesday who always looked the most likely with an attacking lineup chosen by Carlos Carvalhal. It was front combo Hooper and Nuhiu looking most likely to open the scoring. Hooper did have the ball in the net but an incorrect decision meant his goal was ruled out as offside. However the Owls pressure told as the 25-year-old Forestieri poked home after a goalmouth scramble to hand the lead to the home side.

Then, with Hillsborough still in full voice energetic midfield man Kieran Lee doubled the hosts’ lead just two minutes later, drilling the ball low past Birmingham keeper Tomasz Kuszczak. That goal ensured the half ended 2 – 0 to Wednesday.

After the break the points were made safe as Forestieri hit a thumping right-foot shot into the Kop goal after a 60-yard run with the second half just minutes old.

Having failed to register a single shot on target in the first half, the Blues didn’t look likely to overcome the Owls three-goal advantage as the home side cantered to the final whistle without to much concern.

It was a second consecutive win for Sheffield Wednesday, but for Birmingham it was a sixth defeat in 11 matches. Meaning the Owls retain their seventh spot with the challenge of Middlesbrough away next up.
