Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has confirmed that Nicky Weaver is on his list of potential replacements for goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Die-hard Wednesdayite and former Manchester City man Weaver has been the name on everybody’s lips following the news that Lee Grant was to move to Burnley.

Weaver is a free agent and is thought to be keen a move to the team he supported as a boy, and where he enjoyed a loan spell five years ago.

But Irvine hasn’t yet started discussions with any players over the vacant number one jersey at Hillsborough.

He told the Sheffield Star: ‘We need a goalkeeper who will not cost us any money in loan fees. Nicky Weaver is on my list but we have not spoken to any player at this stage or agreed terms.’

Weaver spent six months at Burnley as back-up to Brian Jensen in the Premier League last season.

He’s thougth to be the front-runner to pull on the Owls’ number one jersey for the season opener a week on Saturday.
