Wednesday capped off the initial run of EFL Championship fixtures with an away point at Burton Albion. The Owls took the lead midway through the first half thanks to a fine flicked finish from Gary Hooper after good work from Steven Fletcher and Jack Hunt.

Albion, who’ll prove hard to beat at the Pirelli Stadium this season grabbed a point via Joe Mason in the second half. The Owls could and really should have secured all three-points but just could force home that second goal, much like their efforts at Bolton earlier in the week in the EFL Cup.

Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal reflected on the draw but wanted more as he told swfc.co.uk:

“I don`t know how we didn`t win that game. We were the better team and I feel bad for our players that we haven`t got the win because they deserved all three points.

“We got the goal and then we created more chances to go two in front, but unfortunately the goal didn`t come.

“Their goal is one that we shouldn`t concede, they did not trouble our defence much during the game.

Burton, primarily due to their size as a club will be viewed as cannon fodder for the league’s big spenders and promotion hopefuls like Wednesday and Carlos knows tasks will be harder in the league as he added:

“We know we will get better, all the teams of the Championship have had a similar start.

“Next week is the international break so now all the players can get some rest after the high number of games so far.”

A bad note (aside from Burton leveller) is that of the first half injury to goalkeeper Keiren Westwood who tweeted a picture of his gashed knee after being subbed during the first half for Joe Wildsmith. Carlos commented:

“We will have to assess the situation because I did not see the doctor yet.

“I am not happy because I think the challenge was a red card. I do not say it was deliberate but it was late but we must respect the decision of the referee.”
