Derby County striker Luke Varney is set to return to Wednesday on a one-month loan deal today according to media reports.

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has been actively searching for new attacking options to bolster his squad, and it seems for the former Crewe man is his man.

Varney, who enjoyed a short loan stint in the blue and white stripes last season, is expected to join the Owls on an initial one-month loan, with a loan extension a possibility thereafter.

Laws was said to be chasing Arsenal youngster Jay Simpson, but it could be that he’s given up on the Gunner to turn his attentions to Varney, who made a good impression on the Hillsborough faithful last time out.

The 26-year-old has failed to start a match at Derby after falling down the pecking order under boss Nigel Clough, making just one appearances on the Rams’ substitutes bench.
