Transfer blow for Sheffield Wednesday as 20-year-old appears to have joined Bristol City

|

Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Eddie Nketiah, with the 20-year-old having seemingly joined Bristol City on loan. Arsenal confirmed the move on their official website but haven’t made a formal announcement yet.

It’s bad news for Garry Monk as he was interested in signing the striker as a replacement for the injured Steven Fletcher. Wednesday will be without their top goalscorer for up to two months, so they’re expected to bring in at least one centre-forward before the transfer window shuts.

While Nketiah may be off the table, Connor Wickham could be on his way to Hillsborough. The Owls have led the race for his signature for days, so a season-long loan move could be on the cards. Monk still has Jordan Rhodes, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu and Fernando Forestieri at his disposal, so he’s entirely bereft of attacking options.

The problem is that Rhodes (3), Winnall (1), Nuhiu (3) and Forestieri (1) only have eight goals between them. Fletcher has bagged 12 on his own, so it highlights how damaging his absence could be to Wednesday’s hopes of finishing in the playoffs.

The Owls are currently sixth in the Championship after 27 games and next face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
