With the September international break behind us, Sheffield Wednesday hosted struggling promotion favourites Stoke City at Hillsborough on Saturday.
The visitors started brightly with Benik Afobe scoring two minutes into the game and then giving them a 2-0 advantage before we were even 25 minutes in. Any fears of a bad day were somewhat addressed as Marco Matias scored two minutes after their second and then Barry Bannan produced another moment of magic to equalise within the final ten minutes of the match.
Matias and Bannan may take the headlines this weekend, but another man went quietly about his business to good effect and WhoScored more than gave him credit for that as they rated him, Matt Penney, as our best player on the day.
Coming out of the game, the 20-year-old youngsters stock continues to rise as he picked up a score of 7.59 for his efforts and it was a strong showing with four tackles, two interceptions and four clearances, but he also had a pass accuracy of 86.2% and even registered an effort on goal from his 54 touches as he continues to round his game and continue his development.
He deserves all the credit he’ll get after that performance and it is no surprise to see manager Jos Luhukay start to really rely on him.
