Sheffield Wednesday’s goalkeeping coach Andy Rhodes yesterday left Hillsborough to take up the position of assistant manager at League Two side Oldham Athletic.

Making the step up to assistant gaffer, Rhodes will be working alongside newly appointed Frankie Bunn – a man he played alongside during the Latics’ better days back in the early 1990’s.

He’s been with us since January 2010 and has more than done his job when you consider some of the stoppers we’ve had at the club in the years since – not least the current crop of Keiran Westwood, Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson.

Speaking to the Official Site as he announced his departure, Rhodes admitted that he was leaving with a ‘heavy heart’ but he knew it was the right move in terms of a career progression for him and it will provide him with a significantly different challenge.

“I wish Wednesday all the very best in the future and hope they achieve the promotion back to the Premier League that they deserve.”

When I saw the headline my initial thought was a potential transfer for Jordan Rhodes and looking at social media I clearly wasn’t the only one to think that.

Given his years at the club, many Wednesday fans feel he’ll be a big loss for us and they wish him all the best for the future.

There were also plenty of alls for Kevin Pressman to get the gig as his replacement.
