Last week’s forum poll is done and dusted and the Vital SWFC members have voted for Don Megson as the Greatest Ever Owls Left Back.

Don is one of Sheffield Wednesday’s greatest ever players. He was signed from Mossley in the Cheshire League in 1952. He made his first team debut in November 1959, becoming a regular in the side as a left-back, and eventually captain. He led the team on a lap of honour (the first to do so as a losing captain) after Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat to Everton at the famous 1966 FA Cup Final. Don made 442 appearances for the Owls before moving to Bristol Rovers in March 1970.

A hard-tackling fierce competitor, demanding the utmost from those around him, proud to wear the Wednesday badge, Don is our choice for the Greatest Ever Owls Team.

An honourable mention this week goes to Nigel Worthington, the player who pushed Don very hard in our poll: it was the closest contest so far!

Our Greatest Ever Team’s defence is now complete: Pressman, Nilsson, Walker, Swan, Megson (D.)

This week’s forum poll is for the Greatest Ever Right Wing, and we’re also asking for nominations for the Greatest Ever Owls Centre Midfield. We’ll announce the results for Right Wing next Saturday!
