Sheffield Wednesday suffered a 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening and Sam Winnall was one of many players criticised by supporters on social media. Steven Fletcher could be out of action with a knee injury until March, but Garry Monk doesn’t have a replacement capable of shouldering the scoring burden.

Winnall has been a regular in the last two months, but he’s without a goal since September 2019 and continues to subbed off in games. The 29-year-old struggled to make an impact in midweek and was hauled off for Jordan Rhodes before the hour mark. Whether he starts against Millwall (February 1) remains to be seen.

Against Wigan, Winnall played for 57 minutes, made 24 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 53.3% of his 15 passes, had one shot on target and blocked one shot. He failed to create a chance, make a successful dribble and was dispossessed four times on the ball.

The Englishman has made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring just one goal. Winnall is enduring a four-month goal drought, so he may not be the best player to lead the line.
