Following a difficult summer for Sheffield Wednesday for a variety of reason, caretaker gaffer Lee Bullen couldn’t have had a better start to his latest stint in the dugout at Hillsborough as we went into today’s clash with Millwall at The Den with a 100% winning record from our two games so far.
Five goals scored, with only one conceded isn’t too shabby at all, but everyone knew Millwall would be a different type of game – but could we make it three on the spin?
Sadly no, despite dominating 70% of the ball and having far more chances on and off target, we couldn’t find a way through and the 100% win record ends as the hosts opened the scoring in the 37rd minute to secure a 1-0 victory.
Disappointing yes, but Bullen should have positives – we just needed to be more clinical as their effort was certainly against the run of play.
Speaking to the BBC following the full time whistle, Bullen said of our efforts on the day.
“I don’t think it was a bad performance. We’ve made one mistake in the game, at a corner kick. I don’t think I can ask much more of the players. We’ve been sucker-punched, at the end of the day. We just have to take a deep breath, calm down and get ourselves ready to go again. Millwall deserve a lot of credit. They put bodies on the line. I don’t think we could have gone any more offensive. You think something is going to break for you, but the overriding feeling is that we never got that one real clear-cut opportunity. Our final ball could have been better.”
