Wednesday could suffer a blow ahead of the first Steel City derby of the season with the news that Tommy Spurr could well be out of the match through injury.

Spurr, and ever-present for Wednesday this season at the back, took a knock late-on in the 4-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday and Owls boss Brian Laws feared the worst for the youngster.

‘Tommy is in a lot of pain and there’s a lot of swelling on the ankle. I have to say it doesn’t look good,’ he told the official SWFC website after the match.

‘But Tommy is a very fit lad and a quick healer so we’ll have to wait and see.’

The international break could mean Spurr is back in action sooner than anticipated, with Laws expected to find out the exact damage to his young defender early this week.

But Peter Gilbert and Richard Wood are both expected to be fit and available for the Owls’ next game in two weeks’ time, while Mark Beevers also returned to the fold at Home Park after sitting out the previous matches through injury.
