Sheffield Wednesday’s slow start to life in the Championship season of 2018/19 got a little bit better at the weekend as manager Jos Luhukay saw his side make it three wins on the spin with a 2-1 victory over Reading.
Heading to the Madejski Stadium for the tie, first-half goals from Adam Reach as Lucas Joao saw us return all three points although Reading did score via Liam Moore just after the hour mark to make more of a game of things.
20-year-old defender Matt Penney certainly took his opportunity to shine as he continues forging his career in the game and he’s now featured in five matches so far this year having made his club debut in the EFL Cup clash against Sunderland.
The youngster started the tie and got all 90 minutes under his belt and these fans were delighted with his performance on the day.
Thorniley showed last season he was shining light of youth given a chance. Carried that on this season and from what seen so far, Penney is following suit. 2 potential stars. Also credit to another academy graduate Liam Palmer. Playing how everyone always hoped he would. #swfc

Now it’s time for @swfc to get Cammy, Thorniley and Penney signed up to new long term deals!

Palmer had another solid game today but Jesus, Matt Penney is going to be some player if he keeps improving like he is #swfc

On a great run of form at the moment, an added bonus to have several young promising players come through. Liking the look of Penney and Thorniley especially. It’s a shame we couldn’t keep Clare on #swfc

A very positive game today with goals from Adam Reach ⚽️ & Lucas Joao ⚽️ (shame I actually missed it!) ????????
Very impressed by Penney, couple of great saves at the end from Dawson.

Be nice if we can tie both Dawson and Penney down before the end of internationals #swfc

Player of the year for me will be out of 3 players only
Bannan
Thorniley
Penney #swfc— Lewis Cholerton (@Lewistrollers) September 1, 2018
I hope Hector has come to push Lees, as Thornily looks like the solid one back there, Penney has the LB spot nailed down now too #swfc

Matt Penney looks very good. To think Bradford and Mansfield didn't give him game time #swfc

Long may the young man’s form continue as it’s always good to see the youngsters coming through. Getting his first assist would certainly have been a boost for him.
