Gilligham midfielder Danny Spiller is set to join Wednesday on a free transfer at the end of the season according to reports from Priestfield.

The 26-year-old, who celebrated his birthday last Wednesday, is one of the high-earners at the League One club and is out-of-contract in the summer, prompting Owls boss Brian Laws to raise his awareness in the player.

Spiller came through the youth ranks at Priestfield and has made 78 league starts for the club, scoring six goals along the way, and local media have reported a bust-up between the player and Gills boss Ronnie Jepson.

And Laws will be well aware of Spiller’s abilities, having watched the midfielder in action against his Scunthorpe side as they ran out 2-0 winners down at Priestfield in September.

Spiller picked up tyhe club’s player-of-the-season award in the 2003-2004 campaign but has been a bench-warmer for the League One strugglers this season, making just one start for the club and 13 substitute appearances.
