Wednesday have given up on signing trialist Sam Sodje after a series of niggling injuries ruled him out of featuring in reserves matches.

The former Charlton Athletic and Leeds United defender had been training with Wednesday with a view to signing as soon as the Owls’ transfer embargo was lifted.

But after failing to be fit enough to feature in two reserve games for boss Alan Irvine to cast an eye over him, it has been mutually agreed that Sodje will leave the club.

Irvine told the Sheffield Star: ‘Sam missed a couple of training sessions with injuries, and that made it very difficult; he was scheduled to play against Derby, but he has had a bit of a hamstring strain so wasn’t going to be able to play.

‘I think he thought he needed a decision a bit quicker, on what was going to happen, and I couldn’t give him any decision without seeing him play in games. He’s the type of player who is much easier to assess in games rather than in training.’

Sodje is keen to find a new club after being released by Charlton over the summer.
