Contrary to a belief here at Vital Sheffield Wednesday that Brian Laws was going to bring a new striker to the club – is the Owls boss now happy with what he has?

Vital understood that Laws would be adding a striker to bolster his squad before the big Championship kick-off against a Barnsley in just over a week’s time.

Indeed, Laws seemed to make a new number nine his prime target at the start of pre-season, with Wednesday missing out on young West Ham star Freddie Sears to Crystal Palace, and also showing a keen interest in Everton hitman Victor Anichebe.

So…is that it?

Has Laws given up his chase of bolstering his attack, given his delight with the current crop of strikers in the pre-season games so far?

Akpo Sodje, Francis Jeffers, Marcus Tudgay and Leon Clarke have bagged their fair share of goals over the ‘summer’ months, and although the quartet would make a decent selection in the Wednesday attack, injuries and a possible departure of Tudgay has to be taken into consideration.

We all know finances are tight, after missing out on ouur 16,500 target for season ticket sales, which seem to have had an impact on the amount of cash Laws has to play with.

And with just over a week to go before the start of the season, Laws is leaving it late to add another name to the squad.

It’s the Wednesday way isn’t it, leaving it late?

The latest quotes coming out of Hillsborough from Laws suggest he’s happy with what he’s got, asking for another ’10 per cent’ from his current squad to improve on last season.

Let’s just hope there are no injuries to contend with in the next week.

I guess we can all expect more speculation before the Barnsley game, but hey, there’s only one week of it to go!
