Defender Frank Simek showed signs of steady progression after a lengthy injury lay-off to play 70 minutes in the Owls reserves’ victory at Port Vale this afternoon.

A superb Luke Boden goal was enough to give the Owls a slender 1-0 victory over Vale in the reserve match, which was played this afternoon.

But the more positive news came from the fact that American right-back Simek came through unscathed in his bid to return to first team action sooner rather than later.

Left-back Peter Gilbert was also involved in the clash, while midfielder Sean McAllister played 75 minutes as Wednesday did the double over Vale in reserve outings.

But Owls fans could well be concerned at the absence of striker Akpo Sodje, who wasn’t in the reserve squad.

It’s likely that Saturday’s home clash with Crystal Palace will prove too early for Simek’s first team return.
