Sheffield Wednesday will be without 35-year-old against Brentford due to ‘slight inflammation’

Sheffield Wednesday will be without Keiren Westwood against Brentford due to “slight inflammation” on his shoulder, said Garry Monk in a pre-match press conference. The 35-year-old hasn’t played for Wednesday since their 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion (November 23). Cameron Dawson has been Monk’s first-choice goalkeeper in his absence.

Injury has kept Westwood out of the matchday squad, forcing Paul Jones to be named on the bench in their 1-1 draw with Birmingham City (November 27) and 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic (November 30), but he would likely have been dropped for Dawson anyway after making a series of glaring errors between the sticks.

Should Cameron Dawson keep his place when Keiren Westwood returns?

Monk said to the Sheffield Star on Westwood’s injury: “He’s still feeling his injury. We’re going off his reaction to it. It’ll be dictated by him but he’s receiving treatment, he’s on the mend. We haven’t really got a timescale on it, he’s in a good place and there’s a slight inflammation.” The Republic of Ireland international has made 15 appearances in the Championship this season, keeping only four clean sheets.

As for Dawson, the 24-year-old has made seven appearances in all competitions, conceding just four goals and keeping four clean sheets. In five league outings, he’s amassed one fewer clean sheet (3) than Westwood has in three times the amount of games.

The injury shot-stopper might have a tough task getting his place back when he recovers from injury.
