Steven Fletcher is in talks with Sheffield Wednesday over a new deal that should be finalised very soon, Garry Monk has confirmed. The 32-year-old has been in fantastic form this season, scoring and creating 15 goals in 24 Championship game, but his future at Hillsborough is an uncertain as he’s out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Wednesday are keen to tie Fletcher down and Monk says the Scotland international wants to stay too. Ahead of Saturday afternoon’s meeting with Derby County, he revealed: “The club are in talks with Steven and his representatives. Hopefully we can get it done. He is having a fantastic season.”

Fletcher joined the Owls from Sunderland in 2016 and has gone on to make 132 appearances in all competitions, contributing 47 goals. He’s matched his best return in a season since arriving at Hillsborough (13 league goals), so it’s no surprise Wednesday don’t want to let him go.

Monk has Jordan Rhodes (3), Sam Winnall (1), Fernando Forestieri (2), Connor Wickham (0) and Atdhe Nuhiu (3) at his disposal, but the four strikers have only managed nine goals between them. It’s no coincidence Wednesday picked up only two wins from the 10 games Fletcher was absent for (December and February).

And since he returned from a knee injury, the Owls have picked up four points from two games.
