Boys to men?

Could be according to Owls boss Paul Sturrock. He says the ‘Steel City derby’ may help some of the youngsters blood themselves into the team and ‘kick start’ the season.

Sturrock told the official Sheffield Wednesday site: ‘I’m going into this game with several kids; I might come out of it with those kids becoming men. It could kick-start our season. Derbies are about rolling your sleeves up, iodine on your studs and getting on with it. If we can come out as we did against Leeds, which isn’t as big a game, then I’ve got no fears.’
However, the manager will caution his players not to step across the line in the big match atmosphere: ‘I’m a wee bit worried in case it flares up,’ he added. ‘I’ve got a few Celts in this team and I don’t want them to be getting too excited.’

Wednesday haven’t won at Bramall Lane since 1967 and The Blades are yet to lose at home this season. The news that Neil Warnock is now staying on as their manager is also bound to give them an extra spring in their step as they look to chase down pack leaders Reading. BUT derby games have nothing to do with current form or the latest odds!

Sturrock said ‘In all their home games so far this season they’ve come out of the traps big time. Neil has nailed his colours to the mast and I think the start of the game will be very noisy with their fans showing their appreciation. I could go on and on about their players but when people are standing in their faces; when every 50/50 is being competed; when every second ball is being won, things can turn. We’ve got talented players who can turn the game.’

He also says that he hopes the team realise how much the ‘bragging rights’ mean to the local fans and he hopes they give them something to cheer about.
