According to the Sheffield Star, Fernando Forestieri could be a ‘free agent on July 1st’, as there has been ‘no official offer’ from Sheffield Wednesday to renew his contract.
The 30-year-old has come to the end of a three-year deal signed in 2017 and might be allowed to leave as he’s struggling for form, fitness and playing time under Gary Monk.
Forestieri joined Wednesday for £3.7m from Watford in 2015 and has gone on to make 134 appearances in all competitions, scoring 40 goals and making 18 assists.
The Italian centre-forward had two solid campaigns where he regularly featured and hit double figures for goals (39 games, 15 goals and eight assists in 2015/16) (38 games, 12 goals and six assists in 2016/17), but things have fallen apart in the last three injury-hit seasons.
Forestieri has made only 51/129 Championship appearances since the start of the 2017/18 season, amassing 2822/11610 minutes while scoring a total of 13 goals and making four assists.
The 30-year-old is also one of Wednesday’s highest-earners on £1.3m-a-year/£25k-a-week, so it may be a business decision to let him go after five years of service. He will be missed by supporters, but there are still nine games left for him to impress.
