Sheff Wed midfielder ruled out against Charlton, 27-year-old needs “another week” to recover

Sheffield Wednesday will be without Massimo Luongo against Charlton Athletic on Wednesday evening as he’s still struggling with a groin injury. Garry Monk says the 27-year-old will need “another week” to recover.

Luongo has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals. The Australian international’s last outing came in Wednesday’s 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers (January 18).

He was sent off after 23 minutes against Blackburn and missed the Owls’ 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic (January 28) and 0-0 draw with Millwall (February 1) due to suspension, before picking up an injury that ruled him out of Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Barnsley (February 8).

Luongo is nearing a return, but Monk says their midweek clash with Charlton has come too soon. He told Alex Miller of the Sheffield Star: “It doesn’t look likely (that he will feature). Massimo still has another week or so.”

Monk doesn’t have a lot of midfielders at his disposal after exiling Sam Hutchinson while Alex Hunt is still developing in the u23s. Kieran Lee should start alongside Barry Bannan as a result, but Josh Windass is the only cover they have in case of injury.
