Sheff Wed could be without midfielder against Barnsley, has ‘50/50’ chance of playing

Sheffield Wednesday could be without Massimo Luongo against Barnsley, as the 27-year-old is still struggling with a groin injury.

Luongo has been out of action for nearly three weeks, missing Wednesday’s FA Cup win over Queens Park Rangers (January 24), 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic (January 28) and 0-0 draw with Millwall (February 1).

His last appearance was in the Owls’ 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers (January 18), but Garry Monk is unsure whether he’ll be back in time to face the Tykes. He told Alex Miller of the Sheffield Star: “Massimo is back out on the grass.

“We’re not sure about this weekend, he’s 50/50, the same as Morgan (Fox). We’ve got another training (Friday), so we’ll see if they’re available.” Luongo has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals.

In his absence, Joey Pelupessy partnered Barry Bannan in midfield and helped shut out Millwall at The Den. The pair may be given the nod again on Saturday, as Monk won’t want to risk Luongo if he isn’t 100%.

Wednesday are currently 11th in the Championship with 43 points from 30 games, having picked up only one point from their last three. A win over Barnsley could see the Owls move three places up the table.
