Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Connor Wickham has ‘extended’ his ‘loan’ until the end of the season. The 27-year-old agreed a ‘deal’ to stay at Hillsborough for another month, so he can feature in the Owls’ last seven league games. His contract was up at the end of June, but he’s now sticking around until the end of July.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Wickham joined Wednesday on loan in January and has gone on to make nine appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. The English centre-forward struggled for form (0 goals in 7 games) and playing time (3 starts and 408/630 minutes) under Garry Monk when he initially made the switch, but he’s played 172 minutes from a possible 180 post-lockdown, scoring two goals in his last two games.

Ahead of Wednesday night’s meeting with West Bromwich Albion, Wickham is on course to score three goals from as many matches. After that, Monk’s side will face Swansea City (July 5), Preston North End (July 8), Queens Park Rangers (July 11), Huddersfield Town (July 14), Fulham (July 18) and Middlesbrough (July 22).

Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri haven’t signed a new deal, but Wickham’s upturn in form has softened the blow. It remains to be seen whether a permanent move is possible, but the £1m-rated striker will be key in the run-in regardless.
