Alan Irvine completed his third close season signing yesterday with the arrival of Paul Heffernan. We get the lowdown on the Irishman from the Vital Donny editor Daz.

‘I personally think you have got a great signing especially on a free,’ he said.

‘His plus points are he plays very well down the channels or put in behind the defence and very composed in front of goal.

‘He can also score with his head, he scored a good header against Wednesday when you visited the Keepmoat in 2008-09.

‘He’s always scored goals wherever he as played and I cannot see why he will not continue to do so.

‘His minus points are that he does seem to spend a fair amount of time on the treatment table, missed quite a lot of each season during his time at Rovers through injury.

‘It always seemed to take him until around November or December before he started to find the net on a regular basis. In Rovers’ first season in the Championship, he finished the season as leading goalscorer with ten goals and he didn’t get his first goal until December.

‘In my opinion, I think he fell out of favour at Rovers with the manager after being sent off in Rovers’ play-off semi-final at Southend the season we went up, after that he never seemed to be the first choice striker at the club.

‘The fans at Donny always liked him and whenever he came up against one of his former clubs (Notts County and Bristol City), he got an excellent ovation from their fans.

‘Not very often you see that nowadays so it shows that he must have given all the clubs he`s played for excellent service.’
