Report: ‘Unlikely’ Sheff Wed man ‘will be kept’ due to ‘sparse playing time’ this season

|

According to Yorkshire Live, it’s ‘unlikely’ Paul Jones ‘will be kept’ by Sheffield Wednesday this summer due to his ‘sparse playing time’ under Garry Monk.

The 33-year-old hasn’t made a single appearance this season and hasn’t made the matchday squad since December 2019, so it won’t be a surprise to see him leave at the end of his contract.

Jones is currently behind Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith in the pecking order, but Keiren Westwood and Josh Render may be preferred in goal to the Englishman too, so his future looks up at Hillsborough.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The 33-year-old joined Wednesday on a free transfer from Fleetwood Town last summer and has been an unused substitute on eight occasions. The last time Jones was in the squad was in the Owls’ 1-1 draw with Derby County (December 11, 2019), so Monk soured on him a long time ago.

Jones was only recruited as backup amid an injury crisis in 2019 and there’s no report suggesting a contract extension is on the table, so he’ll likely leave in the coming weeks.

Wednesday have until June 23 to either extend Jones’ deal until the end of the revised season, extend it beyond 2020 or release him.
