According to TEAMtalk, Steven Fletcher is ‘resigned to exit’ Sheffield Wednesday this summer, as the Owls are ‘struggling to satisfy demands’. Wednesday have been in talks with the 33-year-old over a new deal for months but haven’t made any progress, so a departure looks on the cards.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Fletcher joined Wednesday from Sunderland in 2016 and has gone on to make 135 appearances in all competitions, scoring 38 goals and making nine assists. The Scotland international has been a regular under Garry Monk this season, making 29 appearances while scoring 13 goals and making two assists, but his future is uncertain.

Fletcher’s contract is up this summer and he isn’t any closer to putting pen to paper on an extension, so Wednesday might have to prepare for life without him. The experienced centre-forward may only have one move left before considering retirement, so he may be weighing up his options.

Wednesday really can’t afford to let Fletcher go, however, as Fernando Forestieri, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fraser Preston and  Sam Winnall could be on their way out in the coming weeks. All four players are out of contract this summer, so Monk could be left with Jordan Rhodes in attack next season.
