Report: Sheff Wed haven’t offered midfielder a contract extension, 30 y/o likely to leave

Sam Hutchinson is likely to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer as he’s out of contract in the coming months and hasn’t been offered an extension, as per Dom Howson of Yorkshire Live. The 30-year-old was frozen out by Garry Monk in January and doesn’t appear to have a future at Hillsborough.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Wednesday have eight players out of contract this summer – Morgan Fox, Kieran Lee, Joey Pelupessy, Hutchinson, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando Forestieri, Steven Fletcher – but Howson revealed in a Q&A that only Fox and Fletcher have been handed new deals.

When if other Wednesday players had offers on the table, he said: “Not as far as I am aware. I think the main focus is understandably on tying down Fox and Fletcher at the moment.”

Hutchinson may have expected to leave after being dropped from the first-team, but his eventual departure will be significant.

The 30-year-old joined Wednesday from Chelsea in 2014 and has gone on to make 154 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and making four assists. Hutchinson made 24 appearances across the board before his exile too, so he’s spent most of his six years as an Owls regular.

But Monk has decided that the midfielder is surplus to requirements, so it’s hard to see him being offered a chance to stay. The move is surprising, however, as Wednesday could be short in the engine room ahead of next season – Pelupessy and Lee could also be on their way out as they’ve not been handed extensions.

The Owls manager may be leaving himself short by only focusing on Fox and Fletcher.
