According to Football Insider, Middlesbrough have ‘set their sights’ on Morgan Fox and could make a move for the 26-year-old this summer. Fox is out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday in the coming months and doesn’t appear close to putting pen to paper on a contract extension.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Boro have Hayden Coulson, George Friend, Marcus Tavernier, Marc Bola and Marvin Johnson who can operate at left-back, as per Transfermarkt, but Friend is out of contract this summer, Tavernier is more of an attacking-midfielder, Bola was loaned out to Blackpool in January and Johnson is a natural winger.

Football Insider say the North East side are on the hunt for a new left-back and have been ‘hugely impressed’ by Fox’s form. The 26-year-old has turned his career around at Wednesday and is now a regular under Garry Monk, making 31 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing toward four goals.

But with little progress made on renewing his contract, Fox could soon be a free agent. Wednesday are desperate to tie him down and opened talks with the left-back in January, but no progress has been made months later. Boro may not be an attractive proposition for Fox, however.

Jonathan Woodgate’s men were 19th in the Championship with 41 points from 37 games before the season was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic – four places and seven points adrift of Wednesday. The Owls’ form dipped in 2020, so it remains to be seen if Fox would really leave to join Boro.

Wednesday have been struggling to tie down other first-team players – Kieran Lee, Joey Pelupessy, Sam Hutchinson, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando Forestieri, Steven Fletcher – so Fox’s future may remain in the air for some time yet and the rumours linking him with a move aren’t going away, either.
