Report: Goalkeeper unlikely to leave Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day

|

According to Alex Miller of the Sheffield Star, Keiren Westwood isn’t expected to leave Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day despite being frozen out of the first-team by Garry Monk. The 35-year-old lost his starting place to Cameron Dawson in late-November and lost his place in the matchday squad to Joe Wildsmith in late-December.

Westwood has made 14 appearances for Wednesday this season, the last of which came in their 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion (November 23, 2019). He then picked up an injury that ruled him out of Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City (November 27), but Monk revealed the under-fire goalkeeper would have been dropped regardless.

He hasn’t featured since. Westwood has been left out of the matchday squad in 12 of Wednesday’s last 14 games and has been an unused substitute twice. The Republic of Ireland international is out of contract in 2021, so he may need to leave sooner than anticipated as first-team football seems unlikely while Monk remains in charge.

Dawson should continue being No.1 for the remainder of the season while Wildsmith is Wednesday’s No.2
