Race Hots Up For Reported Wednesday Target As Club Confirms Exit

In the middle of last month, reports surfaced suggesting that Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce would return to Sunderland for soon to be out of contract defender Adam Matthews.

The speculation was pretty basic and it linked mostly to Wednesday needing defensive reinforcements and Bruce’s time at the Stadium of Light earlier in his career. Fans were largely mixed when our apparent interest in the 27-year-old Welshman was announced, but it made sense in many regards given the free agent nature of any deal and the fact that he can operate in both defensive full back positions as well as midfield.

Bruce Targets Soon To Be Free Agent From Former Club

Wednesday weren’t the only club linked obviously and it was believed we’d face competition from Queens Park Rangers and Barnsley, if not others, but the speculation has returned this week as Sunderland have now officially confirmed he will be departing when his deal expires.
