Matt Penney has an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday as his contract is up this summer and his last appearance for the Owls was all the way back in November 2018. The 22-year-old has impressed while on loan at FC St Pauli this season and has been a regular under Jos Luhukay when fit, so there may be a chance of Penney staying at Hillsborough.

Garry Monk has said publicly that he wants to see the left-back train this summer after being pleased with his performances during the mid-season break, and a lot of supporters from the Sheffield Wednesday Fans Forum want to see more of Penney too. They say he deserves a new contract and should be in the Owls’ first-team next season.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Daniel Fidler: “New deal, he’s decent.”

Matt Garnett: “I like him. Would make a good wing back in 3-5-2. Play Fox as a left CB where he started his career.”

Jack Darlow: “Give him a run-out. Showed glimpses of what he could do last season and definitely a decent prospect.”

Neil Hopkinson: “Quality young player & should be the future of the club.”

Chris Allport: “Like to think he has picked up good habits in Germany. Worth another go, in my opinion.”

Simon Spud Wainwright: “Definitely a new contract.”

Paul Brown: “Worth a new contract and promotion to first-team. Youngsters getting a chance to shine is our future.”

Joe Feetham: “Give him a new contract. Only young, but he’s got a football head on him.”

Paul Warner: “It must be good to offer him for one or two years. But give him game time.”

Alex Young: “New deal three-year definitely.”

Sean Homar: “Playing in Germany will have been great experience for him. Hopefully (he’s) matured as a player. Would be foolish not to give him another contract for the right money.”

Mark Deakin: “Definitely new contract. I like him and (Alex) Hunt and (Osaze) Urhoghide. They all need a chance (to) invest in youth.”

Derek Prigmore: “Seemed alright, and his stint in Germany won’t have harmed him. Tough one but maybe keep.”

Kj Schmitz: “First-team football, please. Give him (a) proper chance.”

Matthew Spencer: “Give him a new deal. Decent young player.”

Craig Thompson: “New deal.”

Michael Edwards: “New deal for me.”

Gareth Kinneavy: “New deal for me. Looks a talent.”

Joe Patrickson: “Get him a new deal. Looks a promising young lad.”

Asad Riaz: “This boy is quality. No doubt he will be playing in the Premier League in a few seasons.”

John Dwyer: “What I saw of him, he deserves a new contract.”

Luke Walley: “New deal, as he will be cheaper.”

Penney rose through the youth ranks to the first-team in 2016 and has gone on to make 17 appearances in all competitions, making one assist. The 22-year-old made his debut in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Brentford (August 19, 2018) and his last outing was in the Owls’ 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers (November 27).

Penney has been on loan at Bradford (January 31, 2017 – May 31, 2017), Mansfield Town (January 31, 2018 – May 31, 2018) and St Pauli (August 22, 2019 – present), but he could be playing in a Wednesday shirt next season.
