Wednesday will be hoping to get 2007 off to a perfect start by carrying on the fine form which saw them end 2006 so well – with a victory over a Hull side unsure of what the new year holds as they sit in the bottom three with a permanent manager yet to be named.
But a good old Yorkshire derby could swing either way, and Phil Brown will be hoping to give his employers something to think about as he looks to carry on from the victory over Burnley on Saturday to try and win the managers post for himself.
Wednesday Team News:
Brian Laws looks set to name the same side which swept aside struggling Barnsley in the South Yorkshire derby on Saturday with no fresh injury or suspension worries to think about.
The news means striker Steve Maclean should get the nod ahead of Deon Burton after the former Scunthorpe marksman netted his second goal in as many games at Oakwell as well as creating both goals for Wayne Andrews and Chris Brunt.
Madjid Bougherra will be able to play as his one-game suspension doesn’t kick in until next weeks clash with Manchester City in the FA Cup. Bougherra picked up his fifth yellow card in the victory at Stoke on Boxing Day.
Wade Small could feature on the bench for the Owls after he failed a late fitness test at Barnsley. The former MK Dons winger was expected to be part of the 16 that travelled to Oakwell but Laws didn’t risk him as he returned to full fitness following knee surgery.
Player to watch: Glenn Whelan
Maybe not a name linked with ‘key man’ at the start of the campaign, but the midfielder has cemented his starting place with some top-notch performances to keep him ahead of Yoann Folly in the pecking order.
Hull City Team News:
Hull’s caretaker boss Phil Brown is likely to stick with the same side that beat Burnley on Saturday as Danny Coles sits out the second match of his three-game suspension.
Player to watch: Nick Barmby
The former Everton and Spurs midfielder may not have had the best of seasons in the Hull shirt but he seems to enjoy his matches against the Owls – and he will be looking to continue that tomorrow.
