Prediction: Sheffield Wednesday man could return to face Charlton after being dropped by Monk

|

Sheffield Wednesday welcome Charlton Athletic to Hillsborough on Wednesday evening and Garry Monk could ring the changes after his side’s gruelling 3-3 draw with Birmingham City on Saturday.

One player who may be in line for a return is Josh Windass. He’s been an unused substitute in recent weeks but could be key to unlocking Charlton’s defence should Wednesday enjoy the lion’s share of possession as expected.

Charlton are currently 18th in the Championship with 39 points from 34 games and have won only three of their last 16 matches on the road, so Monk could opt for a five-man midfield rather than packing his defence.

Monk named three central defenders in the starting eleven on Saturday to try to nullify Birmingham’s attacking threat, but he should be more bold with his lineup against Charlton as the Owls will be favourites to come out on top.

Windass has made two appearances in all competitions since joining from Wigan Athletic on transfer deadline day last month, scoring one goal.

The 26-year-old started in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Barnsley (February 8) and 1-0 defeat to Luton Town (February 12) but didn’t come off the bench in their 3-0 defeat to Reading (February 15) or against Birmingham.

Windass has been out of favour in recent weeks, but Monk doesn’t have any other creative options in midfield. The Wednesday boss could name two strikers against Charlton, but it may be wiser to add a playmaker in the middle of the park so the Owls dominate the ball.
