The season may only be a matter of weeks old, but Owls fans are already looking towards finishing in the Championship’s top six next term.

The latest poll on Vital Sheffield Wednesday asked users where the club should realistically be aiming to finish next season – Brian Laws’ first full season in charge at S6.

And the majority of 60 per cent voted for a play-off finish next term, giving the Owls a chance of returning to the Premiership.

Laws masterminded a superb end to the last campaign, taking the Owls to within a couple of points of a top six finish by losing just once in the Owls’ last 13 games of the campaign – at promoted Birmingham City.

And the fantastic run of form has prompted Wednesday fans to have an optimistic look at next season.

The club have progressed for the last three years – with play-off victory under former boss Paul Sturrock, before consolidation the following season.

Wednesday may not have had the ideal start to last season but the appointment of Laws in November turned the Owls’ fortunes around, to meet the pre-season aim of a mid-table finish, and just miss out on the play-off places.

But what of the remaining 40 per cent?

Well the optimism certainly seems to be rolling in by the truck load at S6 with just five per cent of the remaining votes predicting the Owls will finish outside the play-offs! With three per cent thinking Wednesday will mirror last season and get a respectable mid-table finish, while two per cent feel Wednesday will do worse than last term.

And this is where the voting gets a little crazy, don’t shoot the messenger though! We told there was optimism flying about at Hillsborough in pre-season. There always is isn’t there?

A whopping 21 per cent of Vital Sheffield Wednesday users think that Wednesday could even go one step further and gain automatic promotion! Wednesday were one of the form teams of the division last season, but a top two finish seems somewhat unrealistic at the moment. Feel free to have a go if I’m happily proved wrong though!

And yes, I saved this bit for last…

Fourteen per cent of users felt Wednesday could go up as champions next season! No, it’s not April 1st, but we here at Vital are glad to see the optimism returning to Hillsborough amid years of doom and gloom – lets hope it’s the same come October eh?
