Any move by Wednesday for former loan striker Luke Varney has been put on hold after Owls boss Alan Irvine revealed he can’t afford to bring the former Crewe man back to S6.

Varney, who seems to be frozen out at Derby County under boss Nigel Clough, is keen for a return to Hillsborough after playing the first half of the season in the blue and white stripes.

And Irvine, although not working with the striker before, also seems keen to bring him back to help the Owls battle against relegation from the Championship.

But unless someone leaves Hillsborough in the January transfer window, no move for Varney will be possible.

‘I know Luke Varney did very well when he was here,’ Irvine told the official SWFC website.

‘He is a very good player and someone I have known of since he was at Crewe but right at this moment, without any other players going out, we don’t have the funds to bring anybody else in.’
