Wednesday have announced their first signing of the summer in Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

The 31-year-old stopper is out-of-contract with the Premier League club and he’ll sign a two-year contract at Hillsborough in July.

The England international goalkeeper has seen his career largely blighted by injury but he’s keen to get back to regular first-team action after being back-up at the DW Stadium in recent campaigns.

‘This is a fantastic move for me and I am delighted to be here,’ Kirkland told the official SWFC website.

‘There have been stories about injuries but I have been fully fit for the last two seasons at Wigan and really frustrated at being a number two.

‘I’m chomping at the bit to start playing again and to join a club like Sheffield Wednesday at this time is a great move.

‘Everybody saw what happened at Hillsborough on the last day of the season and to think that I will be part of that is really exciting.’

Jones has offered Stephen Bywater, the Owls’ number one last season, a new deal to remain at Hillsborough alongside young stopper Aaron Jameson, but Richard O’Donnell was allowed to move on to Chesterfield.
