Wednesday could be boosted with the return of top-scorer Neil Mellor to training today, just over two weeks after sustaining an ankle injury.

The on-loan striker was carried off the pitch on a stretcher when the Owls fell to a 3-1 defeat at Carlisle United as they crashed out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at the norther area semi-final stage.

It was feared the former Liverpool youngster, and Owls top-scorer, could be out for some time.

But scans revealed the injury wasn’t as bad as first feared, and Mellor has given himself a fighting chance of being available for selection for the Owls trip to Exeter in npower League One on Saturday.

The hitman was expected to return to training with the rest of his team-mates today after making a good recovery from the ankle set-back.

A starting role at Exter may come too soon, but the news of his return will be a big boost for Owls boss Alan Irvine going into the hectic festive fixture period.
