Wednesday chairman Dave Allen has revealed that any money received for players will not be spent in the January transfer window, and instead left for summer purchases.

The Owls are set to receive a bumper payout for Algerian international defender Madjid Bougherra – with Everton the favourites to secure his services – and have already received £250k for young striker Drew Talbot.

But Allen told the Sheffield Telegraph that any incoming money would be saved for Owls boss Brian Laws to spend at the end of the season – and not in the January transfer window.

He said: ‘I’ve always said mid-table would be fine for this year. We’d save most of the money for next season.

‘There would be little bits available if Brian wanted to do something now but the real spend would be in the summer – on one or two quality signings.’

Many Owls fans were in favour of Laws getting some money to spend this January transfer window to strengthen the squad and push for a play-off place after his fantastic start at the Hillsborough reigns.

But it now looks as though the Owls will have to make do with their current squad until the end of the season – minus star defender Madjid Bougherra.
