Wednesday boss Brian Laws has revealed that a trio of players, including club captain Steve Watson, will not be offered new deals at Hillsborough.

Laws has revealed his retained list following the end of the campaign but there will be no new deal for the former Newcastle and Everton man, who finished the season injured and is still in recovery.

Youngsters Liam McMenamin and Sam Liversidge have also been told to look elsewhere for deals after being deemed surplus to requirements at S6.

But Richard Hinds, Michael Gray, Luke Boden and Arron Jameson have all been offered extensions to their current deals, following hot-on-the-heels of goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell.

And Laws revealed that the decision to release 34-year-old Watson wasn’t an easy one to come to.

He told www.swfc.co.uk: ‘Steve Watson is a magnificent professional whose influence will certainly be missed at this football club.

‘But Steve understands that because of his injury situation, the club is not able to offer him a new contract’

Watson was thought to be considering retiring following his injury earlier in the season – a rumour which has since seen cold water poured on it.

He’ll be remembered for scoring the sublime match-winning goal against Sheffield United in the derby clash at Hillsborough last season.
