Wednesday defender Peter Gilbert will miss the rest of the season after picking up a knee injury in the weekend’s 3-1 victory over Wolves.

The former Leicester defender played just nine minutes in the match at Molineux and underwent scans this week to see if the extent of his knee injury was as bad as first thought.

Owls boss Paul Sturrock told the official SWFC site: ‘It’s a big dissapointment with no loans available and Woody out aswell. We’d be short down the left side if Hillsy was to go down.’

The 22-year-old has played just 10 games for the Owls since his move from Championship rivals Leicester City in January. He’s recently adjusted to play in a back three rather than his preferred left-back role.

The news will be a big blow to Wednesday who are already missing Richard Wood through injury. John Hills returned in place of Gilbert at Wolves and is set to continue in his absence.

Sturrock continued: ‘It’s only a slight tear that can be mended very quickly. We’ll rush him in today and we hope he’ll be ready for next season.’
