Reports linking Wednesday with a swoop for Notts County striker Lee Hughes have upped a gear over the last 24 hours.

The Owls have been reported to be interesting in bringing the 34-year-old to Hillsborough in the January transfer window for a fee believed to be around £200,000.

The Mirror yesterday reported Wednesday’s interest in the former West Brom man, who has netted ten goals for County so far this season.

And the Nottingham Evening Post has today followed it up by claiming Hughes, who is a fans’ favourite at Meadow Lane, could be set to receive a bid from S6.

It would be a strange move for the Owls, given that they signed Gary Madine from Carlisle United at the weekend to bolster an attack which already includes Neil Mellor, Clinton Morrison and Paul Heffernan.

But you know what they say, there’s no smoke without fire, and with Owls chairman Milan Mandaric insisting Wednesday are looking to bring at least six new signings to the club this month, Hughes could well be on Alan Irvine’s radar.
